Cialdini introduces you to six principles of ethical persuasion:

• scarcity,

• liking,

• authority,

• social proof, and

• commitment/consistency

While these persuasion factors can be used for good, they can also be used for bad and if used clumsily and with no subtlety, the person you are trying to persuade will become more sceptical.

"Influence" is a book that just about everyone should read, whether you are a sales person, marketer, charity fund raiser, parent or friend.

Not only will it help make you more persuasive when you properly apply these persuasion factors, the book serves as a huge wake up call for all of us who fall victim to these tricks when we are buying.

Robert Cialdini explains that he became interested in influence, persuasion and compliance because he was a patsy - an easy target for anyone with an offer.

I would imagine that it would be easy to write a dry and boring book on the psychology but Robert Cialdini's book is fascinating.

He is a leading thinker in the field of marketing and he has played a major role in developing the vital concept called “positioning,”

Jack Trout is president of Trout & Partners, one of the most prestigious marketing firms with headquarters in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, USA and offices in 13 countries.

The firm has many big name clients including AT&T, IBM, Burger King, Merrill Lynch, Xerox, Merck, Lotus, Ericsson, Tetra Pak, Repsol, Hewlett-Packard, Procter & Gamble, Southwest Airlines and other Fortune 500 companies.
