I watched a very interesting video, "Reaching Generations" from iLearningGlobal.tv by Terri Murphy talking about the issues involved with communicating and marketing to the different age generations.
I wasn't familiar with Terri Murphy but she is an expert sales trainer (from the real estate industry), author and a very good speaker.
The marketing to the different generations subject is fascinating.
Have you stopped to think about how your business communicates to the different age groups and how doing something could attract one group and repel another by accident?
I must admit that I hadn't.
The danger is that you ignore the different generations and just think about marketing to people who think like you do.
You have heard of the Golden Rule - treat other people as you want to be treated - which sounds good until you hear about the Platinum Rule (identified by another iLearning Global faculty member Tony Allessandra) - treat other people the way they want to be treated.
Makes sense doesn't it?
And while you can ask customers if they prefer emails, texts, telephone calls or letters - and some of the multinationals do - how do you know how to communicate to your prospects.
But it's not just about the channels - we know that the youngest generation use text messages and Facebook - but also about the message sent out.
How Marketing To Different Generations Applies To Me
I need to think about this - and watch the video from Terri Murphy at least once more - since clients can be 25 or 65.
The problems that have may be the same but the marketing message needs to be different.
I think I may have been guilty of following the golden rule.
