Should pet shops sell dogs and puppies? Can pet shops play a vital role in helping to rescue dogs and puppies?
These are emotive questions and I hate the idea of any dog being maltreated and living in misery, deprived of human companionship and love in the detestable puppy farms and puppy mills that have traditionally bred the puppies sold in pet stores.
So I was interested to see this story about OrangeBone, a puppy store in Los Angeles which has changed from selling puppies to the adoption of rescue dogs and puppies.
The change was made after the animal rights group Last Chance For Animals were protesting outside the shop and the owner decided to talk. The owner decided to check on his suppliers - but none of them would let him see the facilities.

Can UK pet shops adopt a similar policy and help to rescue dogs and puppies?
It would be nice to think so. The emotional pull of seeing a beautiful, friendly puppy desperate for a home in a pet shop is strong and the cruel and disgusting puppy farms shouldn't be profiting from mistreating the dogs.
