The Core Myth is an idea that Rich Schefren shares in the Founders Club.
Basically it is the story of your business - how and why it began and how it has developed to be whatever it is today.
The Core Myth concept gives a deeper understanding of what your business is all about to employees, customers and prospective customers.
It explains the reason for being and the purpose.
But the Core Myth goes further than that.
I talk much more about the Core Myth as a way to differentiate your business on another blog.
Here I want to look at what it can do for you personally.
Rich Schefren is famous as the guy who helped Internet markets see that they can't profit as opportunity seekers. Instead, success came from building a business strategically.
Writing out your story or core myth helps you to get clear on who you are and what you are trying to achieve.
I recommend that you do it in two parts.
First go back in history and look at where you are now and examine the critical events and decisions that got you to where you are.
Take time to reflect on decisions that you thought were big at the time but you can see either made little impact on your life or were a wrong turning. It all helps to build enlightenment.
Once you're clear on the past, reflect on it.
What are you proud of?
What do you wish you could change?
Now start thinking about your future story.
What do you want the next five, ten or even twenty years to hold for you.
Imagine yourself aat some point in the future, updating your story or Core Myth.
What do you want to be able to write?
What obstacles do you need to overcome? Who is standing in your way?
What can you do to give yourself a life you can be proud of.
I'm twisting Rich Schefren's idea of the Core Myth because I think that one of the biggest reasons to live oportunity by opportunity (and suffer the consequences) is because we don't have a long term visions of our lives.
We did as children.
We were asked "What do you want to be when you grow up?"
And you probably had a clear answer which guided what you did. You had ssomething to work for.
But things change when we become adults.
getting past the daily grind takes over.
We lose our ambition.
We lose our vision of what we want to become.
We just know that we don't want what we've got.
And that leads us into chasing opportunities that give us hope of a better life, even though we know that the promises are probably faalse.
It's a huge problem in life generally but especially for those who want to make money in Internet marketing.
It's much too easy to jump from one thing to another that promises us an easier way to riches.
But if you get your future story mapped out in your head, you can see which are the false turns.
So you don't get tempted.
You stay on the straight and narrow.
You live your life with purpose to achieve the Core Myth that you've laid out in front of you.
I've taken Rich's concept of the Core Myth and twisted it because I believe that if you want a compelling story for your customers and employees to commit to, you've got to find it in yourself first.
If you don't believe, then there's no reason why anyone else should.
The more you doubt it, the less convinced will others be.
I recommedn you read The Core Myth report from Rich Schefren - all 96 pages of it - and produce your story.
But go beyond where you are and where you have been and look to the future.
Give yourself a chance to dream.
Think about the story you want to tell in the future.
