Shut Up, Stop Whining & Get A Life - Larry Winget
Shut Up, Stop Whining & Get A Life is a headline that grabs attention but it's not me saying it.
Instead it refers to a book by Larry Winget (the Pitbull of of personal development). The full title is "Shut Up, Stop Whining & Get A Life: A Kick-Butt Approach To A Better Life".
I find that people get confused between business coaching and life coaching.
Some coaches offer both but I am very clear which side I fall on and my focus is on improving the business.
However with small businesses, the business owner is dominant and to change the business, you often have to change the owner.
I know that in the coaching spectrum of skills, this is my weakest area.
If you want to know about marketing, finance, strategy and business planning then that's fine but I haven't had much time for the life-changing personal development books.
I know that this is a weakness. I have to improve in this area if I am going to have maximum effect on my clients.
So I was delighted when I saw the title of the book because it sounded like a hard hitting, action focused book and that's generally the impression that I get from reading the 7 page book summary of Shut Up Stop Whining from BusinessSummaries.
Larry Winget certainly doesn't hold back when he tells you to:
- Shut up and listen to the right people (the people you love and who love you, your own conscience, people who set the example to follow.)
- Stop whining - don't pass on being miserable to other people in the hope of attracting attention. Stop looking for excuses and take personal accountability for your life.
The book then goes on to give valuable and practical advice for people who need to get a life.
For example it tells you that "you are not stupid but you are lazy." Perhaps not physically lazy but intellectually or emotionally lazy.
In my own coaching I use a saying "Can Do, Will Do, Have Done - Wow" in my own business coaching.
First you have to
- decide what it is that you want - in a business coaching setting this is usually more profit for each hour you spend in the business.
- then you need to make sure that you have the skills and abilities to be able to do it (or if not, be prepared to buy them in) - this is the Can Do and represents the intellectual side.
- the next stage is to emotionally commit to doing it - the Will Do stage - look at the pain involved in not doing it and the gains involved with doing it. Commit to taking action and seeing it through.
- the fourth stage is the action stage but a half completed job left uncompleted is worse than I job never started. Have Done represents the feeling of accomplishment when you have done the task.
- the final stage is look at your results - the Wow stage - so that you can recognise your achievements and celebrate your success.
Larry Winget's book takes you through all the aspects that I can think of, encouraging you to take personal responsibility for your life.
This "slap around the face" book could be what you are looking for if you are looking for more fulfilment and happiness in your life.
I rate the BusinessSummaries report of "Shut Up Stop Whining & Get A Life" with a 3 Star rating. I am glad that I have read the summary although I don't have any desire to read the book.
