There has been much written about "The Secret" and the Law of Attraction and I have written more than I intended.
The essence to The Secret is that "thought become things."
What you think about will be attracted to you through the Law of Attraction.
Think good, positive thoughts and positive things will happen to you.
Think negative thoughts and negative things will happen to you.
On that level, I don't have a problem with the Law of Attraction but some of the other stuff...that's a different story.
Focus Your Mind On What You Want
If you know what you really want, your mind is focused on ideas that will move you in the right direction and doesn't give any attention to anything that is irrelevant.
In fact the mind can also ignore things that are relevant but conflict with your thoughts. You don't deliberately ignore things, you don't reject the information - you just do not see it.
I also don't have a problem with the Law of Attraction idea that you think about a bad thing, your mind reinforces it.
If you have an aim to get out of debt, your mind is focusing on the thoughts connected with all the financial and emotional problems associated with debt. You are still thinking of debt and are likely to stay in debt.
Instead if you think of income generation and opportunities for profit, you will start seeing opportunities for profit. Provided you take the appropriate actions to take advantage, you can earn so much that you are no longer in debt.
On this basis, you can see that if you think about what you want and you real feel about having what you want, then your mind looks for and finds opportunities.
Does The Law Of Attraction Mean You Can Have Everything You Want
The Secret says "think of everything that you want and the Universe will deliver it."
If you don't get what you want then it's because of you and not the Universe. It's because you aren't ready to receive it. You haven't moved into alignment.
I see some sense in that.
If you want but don't act, you won't get.
If you act carelessly, you won't get what you want.
You are a vital part and the controlling force of your life. Think like a victim and you will stay a victim but think like a winner and you will be victorious.
But bad things do happen
There are bigger forces around and for me, this is where The Secret loses the plot.
The Law of Attraction concept is based on the ideas that your actions impact on other people.
Give and you will receive but give unconditionally. You may not get immediate payback but some time, some place things will be returned.
But other people's negative actions have the potential to impact on your negatively.
The occupants of the Twin Towers on September 11th 2001 weren't thinking about two planes controlled by terrorists deliberately being crashed into the buildings. They didn't think and receive. It was an action that was beyond comprehension to our Western civilisation and ideals.
The victims of the South East Asian Tsunami on December 26th 2004 weren't thinking about the possibility of the oceans rising up in fury. But they still died in the flood waters.
Victims of African famines and the AIDS epidemics weren't thinking and receiving back what they wanted from the Universe. They still die.
But it wasn't just them either who reap the consequences, all their families and friends were also deeply affected.
Did all these people suffer because they broke the Law of Attraction?
Of course not. Things do happen that no one can control.
You Do Have A Choice
Accept that bad things happen but you can control how you respond.
You can be grateful for what you have, act positively and recover or you could stay negative and squander the precious gift of life.
The Film - The Secret
It starts dramatically about how The Secret has been known by the great and the good for thousands of years but by implication, it has been held back from the masses. But now, through "The Secret" film you can finally find out what made successful people successful and condemned the rest of us to "leading lives of quiet desperation."
But afterwards there is little drama.
Just plenty of well meaning, self promoting talking heads emphasising different elements of The Secret.
It is over long and I got bored.
I guess that they had to make it nearly 90 minutes to fit in the film category. The Secret could have been told much quicker.
I also found it irritating to keep jumping from one talking head to another and some were much more convincing than others.
But I did get value from watching The Secret.
It confirmed my belief that there are two types of people:
- people who decide what they want and make things happen
- the rest who let things happen to them.
To that extent I can see that The Secret is a worthy product.
Do You Need Guidance For A Better Life?
If it helps you to accept responsibility for your life, take ownership, decide what you want, open your mind up to the possibilities and take action then The Secret is very valuable.
If you feel that your life is out of control, that you are drifting, that you are a victim but you want to change then take any chance you can get to see it and learn about the Law of Attraction.
Take a pen and paper along to take notes.
Talk about it to friends. Look for people who are role models for applying The Secret and use them as an example to follow.
Look at people who you know who seem to be perpetual victims. Can you see how their attitudes and actions bring bad consequences on themselves.
Look for people who have seen The Secret, tried to apply it and it hasn't worked. Have they taken the message on too simple a level?
Do they expect things to happen too quickly, without taking any actions and given up?
Learn from what you see and decide that at the essence, there is a deep truth. You can become what you think about.
If You Already Have Clarity & Focus In Your Life
You can afford to give The Secret a miss.
You already know the core message embedded in the Law of Attraction and you will achieve more by using the 90 minutes to take positive action towards your goals than you will by watching the film.
Should You Risk Buying The Secret
$30 for the route to happiness sounds like a bargain to me if you need direction or if someone you care about needs guidance.
At the time of writing, there are 1579 reviews on Amazon for The Secret DVD - 57% or 899 give it a five star rating while 241 or 15% thought it was rubbish.
For me, it all depends on where you are starting from.
If you need help and there is a better than 50% chance that you will find The Secret inspiring (based on the evidence of the Amazon reviews) then it has to be worth the risk unless you are so desperately in need of the money that there are terrible consequences.
Have you seen the film or read the book?
What did you think? Has the Law of Attraction helped to transform your life?
