I had a strange telephone conversation today which I have to admit, I didn't handle very well.
"I want a business opportunity that will make lost of money" my caller said.
"What can you recommend?"
I tried to explain that my service didn't work like that. I help people who already have a business or at least have a clear business idea or concept.
"I've tried lots of things but everything is a scam and I've been ripped off" my caller replied. "Tell me a business that makes lots of money."
I went quiet. In the UK we have an expression "gobsmacked" which means that you are so surprised that you can't think what to say for the best.
I've never had this kind of call before so I waffled about finding a business which my caller felt passionate about and suited his skills and personal strengths, trying to make clear that the other businesses may not have succeeded because the passion was missing.
"I don't care about anything but money. Tell me a business that will make me a lot of money."
Now this money based approach is the exact opposite to the way I think.
I see money and profit as the reward for providing great value and service to your customers, helping them solve problems, achieve dreams or realise opportunities.
I suggested searching the Internet for business opportunities but we can back to the problem that "they are all scams". I'd forgotten about John Crickett's Business Opportunities And Ideas Blog and John has recently posted 10 Tactics for Finding New Business Ideas. Of course there is no guarantee of success but being an entrepreneur is about taking controlled risks.
After insulting me a number of times, me putting the phone down on him and him calling back, my suffering came to an end.
I'm always willing to learn so how should I have handled his call?
And do you know an opportunity that will make lots of money? A genuine business opportunity and not a scam?
