There are various basic sales methodologies ranging from those with a hard selling approach for an individual transaction to a much softer approach which looks at the profit available from establishing a long term relationship.
I find the second way, a much more natural approach to selling that is really based around helping the customer to buy what's best.
The danger is that you can wimp out of asking for the sale on the assumption that the customer will ask to buy when he is ready. Research into buying behaviour shows that a lot of sales are lost in this way.
