A simple fact. Experts command attention and respect.
I think one of the hardest lessons for anyone new to marketing their own business is that no one is as fascinated by all the ins-and-outs of what is going on as they thought.
The exciting new product or service you want to tell people about is seen as an irritating distraction, an irrelevance or an unwanted distraction by the people you are trying to market to.
But there are two ways around this business problem.
The first is by using strong, effective, compelling marketing which answers the classic question "What's in it for me?"
What's In It For Me?
Self interest rules.
In any swap for time and/or money the other person wants to know how they gain and will then make a decision to invest or ignore.
The simple rule is "if you don't make it important and relevant to me, the answer is no".
Some marketing experts say that you have 3 seconds to make an impact and get to the "tell me some more" stage. It seems that you can get 3 seconds of attention from anyone. It's not much of an intrusion but if you want more you have to earn it.
The second way of getting your market's attention is by building up a reputation.
Be Seen As An Expert
This is not calling yourself an expert but being seen as an expert by the market because you have spent the time and effort gaining the reputation as an expert.
Someone who knows stuff that other people don't.
Someone who can connect the dots and make sense of the world.
Someone with the answers to the problems of the market.
Being seen as the expert is all about perceptions because what people believe is real to them.
There is no value in being a genuine expert if no one recognises that expertise so you need to learn how to build up credibility so that you are seen as the expert.
But people pay attention to experts. They may not hang on every word but the expert has a huge benefit in the battle for attention.
Breaking Into The Virtuous Circle
In some ways this is a virtuous circle. As you become known for your expertise, other people talk about it and that enhances your reputation and spread the word wider.
But you have to be able to break into the world of the experts because of the conundrum - people won't pay attention.
To help you do that, Rich Schefren, known as the guru to the Internet marketing gurus, is putting together a short training program on how to be seen as the instant expert.
See how this expert status spreads, as I introduced Rich as the guru to the Internet marketing gurus because he has coached many of the biggest names in Internet marketing before they became famous.
He also put together an expensive training and coaching program called Maven Marketing with Jay Abraham which was all about being seen as the maven or recognised expert in your niche.
