Search engine marketing in the form of search engine optimisation ( SEO ) and pay per click (PPC) is the most popular and effective way to be found by:
- Customers who are ready to buy
- Customers who are getting ready to buy
Making sure that your business is found where customers look is what I call search marketing (as opposed to outreach marketing when you reach out pro-actively to make contact).
Don't get confused over what you want.
In order, you need:
- Sales and profitable transactions
- Clicks to your website
- High rankings on popular search phrases
- High rankings on rarely used search phrases
Despite the average pitch from SEO marketing companies, being ranked #1 on Google isn't necessarily what you want.

Which is better, SEO or PPC?
SEO is free but takes a lot of time.
PPC costs money but is very quick.
Remember to take into account return on time as well as return on money invested.
The big problem with search engine optimisation is that the popular search engines - Google, Yahoo and Bing - owe you as the content provider nothing. You benefit if you are ranked well but at a whim, the search algorithms can change and your rankings and traffic disappear.
