One of the blogs I enjoy reading regularly is The Total Package from Clayton Makepeace and his school of copywriters.
Clayton makes the point that it is easy to look for excuses when things get tough and these stop you doing anything.
He's identified these five opportunities:
- Opportunity#1 - Anything that helps consumers or companies live better for less
- Opportunity #2 - Things that help make consumers or businesses more money
- Opportunity #3 - Little luxuries and guilty pleasures
- Opportunity #4 - Products and services for the richest one-quarter of one percent
- Opportunity #5 - Products we all need no matter what
1, 2 and 5 are pretty obvious but I thought 3 and 4 were interesting.
First, isn't it nice to have a modest splurge?
To scrimp and save and then indulge yourself with a little pampering as a reward? The value and the frequency of the treats may have gone down in these tough times but, when money is short, the expenditure means that much more, whether it's for you or a loved one.
Finally, the rich people are still very rich. Sometimes you can miss the obvious opportunities (and hold back on upsells and cross-sells) because you assume that everyone has tightened the purse strings and are watching the pennies, hoping the pounds look after themselves.
You can read more about Clayton Makepeace's thoughts on How to Grow (very) Rich In Tough Economic Times.
