Sadly the reverse often happens - hiring fast and firing slow - and that is a recipe for disaster.
I found an excellent article on Profile Globals by Peter Watson on the 9 Most Common Hiring Mistakes (And What To Do To Avoid Them)
The link to the full article is below but I want to just summarise these 9 points:

I am currently updating my coaching notes and training for Pillar 7 of the Eight Pillars of Business Prosperity, Leading Your Team and thought I should answer the questions:
"What is a leader?"
"What is leadership?"
It sounds silly but for all the studies into leadership, the traits of being a leader and how you can become a better leader, there doesn't seem to be any agreed definition of the basics.

One of my favourite books for managing people is "The One Minute Manager" by Ken Blanchard and Spencer Johnson (see my One Minute Manager Review) but I am aware that some people are critical of the approach.
As I am currently updating my notes and training on Pillar 7 of the Eight Pillars of Business Prosperity which focuses on leading your team, it makes sense to take a critical look at the One Minute Manager and see whether the criticisms are valid.

I have just wasted time dropping my car off to be serviced due to the classic problem of "it's not my job".
When I arrived, I was third in the queue for the service desk and both people in front of me had lengthy queries. All I needed to do was to drop my keys off and sign a pre-printed service form.
