Business Problems: Diagnosing What Is Wrong

Business problems can stop you having the successful business you want for yourself, your family and for your employees.

The symptoms of the problem are usually very clear - one or more of:

  • Few customers
     
  • Low prices
     
  • Losing money
     
  • Unhappy workforce
     
  • Frustrated entrepreneur

But can you fix the symptoms or do you need to fix the underlying problem?

It is much more effective to diagnose the business problem or the problems that are causing the visible symptoms? While the symptoms are obvious, the cause is often not so obvious.

This is why I love the cover of The Final Chapter by Rich Schefren.

  • You need to coordinate everything happening with an action plan to make sure that everything that needs to happen does happen.

This makes a lot of sense to me and I find that it makes a great diagnosis tool.

Rich Schefren doesn't just give you the formula for business success but he gives you a business problem symptom sorter which is a very useful problem diagnostic tool.

Working Back From Symptom To Problem

If any of these success factors are missing, then business becomes more difficult because the missing element causes business problems.

The genius of the diagram is that it allows you to work back from the symptom to the problem so that you can see what is potentially missing.

Take a look at these business problems

  • Confusion - you're not sure where the business is going or what you should be doing - this indicates that the key problem is that Vision is missing from your business. When you clarify your vision, the confusion will disappear.
     
  • Anxiety - you are finding it very stressful working in your business and you are not getting the enjoyment you should - disappointing results and the clear evidence of an undiagnosed business problem will cause stress but it will be made worse if you are not playing to your strengths. Doing things that you are not good at causes difficulties and problems while things are easy when you work in your areas of strength.
     
  • Unmotivated - you have a direction but the problem is, it doesn't stir you into action - this is because passion is missing. You have chosen a business or a vision which you thought would make you money but it doesn't excite you. If you can find the passion, for what the business does for you, your family or your customers, you will feel re-energised.
     
  • Frustration - things are not happening as fast as you want or as well as you want. This can often be traced back to the problem that you and the business lack resources - perhaps it's money or you are trying to use unsuitable equipment or to get the wrong people who don't have the skills and aptitudes necessary to do the work.
     
  • Limited Success - things are OK but the problem is you never seem to get to take-off speed and build the business you know you could. This is probably because you haven't established strong relationships with people and businesses who can help you while also gaining from your success.
     
  • Sluggish Results - again things are OK but performance should be better. You have the partners in place but still things aren't happening because the underlying business problem is that you lack powerful tactics. You have opportunities to sell and upsell but you fail to take them.
     
  • False Starts - things start off well but then problems start happening and you lose control. In this situation, you will find that better action plans, showing what will be done, when and by whom will lead to more concerted effort and longer lasting success.

Using The Business Problem Diagnosis

I like this problem analysis because it can work back from the symptom when so many business health checks dive straight into what is happening in the business.

Your Constraints Limit Your Success

I'll say it again "Your constraints limit your success".

If it sounds presumptive that I think you have constraints then I am sorry but unless you have unlimited success in everything you do, something or some things are holding you back.

Perhaps I should be asking if you have feel you are achieving everything you are capable of achieving and whether you get frustrated when things don't work out as well as you hoped.

There's a high priced fancy coaching program from one of my mentors Rich Schefren that is being released today (June 11th 2009).

It is probably not for you and there are plenty of reasons not to buy - not least the price - but what if you could unblock whatever it is that is holding you back.

What if you could take a step at releasing some of the potential that is already inside you.

Is it worth making a little time to read a free report which will explain more about constraints and how the work away, stopping you achieving what you want?

How To Run A Mastermind Group

I have just been watching Rich Schefren on his live screen feed 24 hour marathon. I logged in after the 23 hour mark and I am amazed at Rich's mental stamina because he is still thinking and talking very clearly.

While I was watching he gave advice on how to run a mastermind group so this is what Rich Schefren said based on his experience of attending three brands of formal masterminding.

Size of group:
Best to have about six to eight people in the group to bring in plenty of ideas to the mastermind group  but not too many to make the process  overwhelming.

Process:
Divide the meeting into four segments of say 15 minutes each.

  1. The person seeking advice describes the process in as much detail as they can.
     
  2. The other mastermind group members ask their questions to find out more detail and to increase their understanding of the problem.
     
  3. Now that they are fully informed and understand, the mastermind group offer up suggestions and ideas to solve the problem.
     
  4. In the final segment, the person with the problem picks out the best ideas and makes a commitment to take certain action between this meeting and the next meeting. 

Good advice from Rich Schefren on the running of the mastermind group and he made the important point that the group will hold the member accountable and that it is unacceptable to fail to implement and effectively waste the time of the group.

Interestingly the follow up question was about the people Rich Schefren turns to for advice and he nominated the following:

Mentors - Jay Abraham, Clayton Makepeace and Michael Masterson

Peers - Jeff Walker, Frank Kern and Mike Filsaime

I thought that this TV video stream was a bit of a gimmick when I first heard the idea but now there are 1069 viewers watching.

Following the recent problems the Internet gurus have had with launch deadlines I thought I'd give Strategic Profit a test but it is here on time.

Early Impressions of The Uncertainty Syndrome

I am going to try to read, review and write at the same time so this multi-tasking will be quite a challenge.

The first surprise is that when you download the report, the file is called The Entrepreneurial Emergency and is written to answer:

Why entrepreneurs in a frantic search for quick profits and fast results are confusing:

  • stress with success
     
  • adrenaline with purpose
     
  • effort with effectiveness
     
  • potential with profits

and the one thing that'll finally make your earnings exceed your effort.

The second surprise is that this has turned into a sixty page report including the front cover when it was only yesterday that Rich twittered that he had reduced it from 340 pages to 40 pages.

The Contents of The Entrepreneurial Emergency

The report (these name changes are playing havoc with my desire to optimise this page for search engines so please excuse me as I switch) starts with a three page introduction by Jay Abraham emphasising that Rich Schefren is the only online guru Jay pays close attention to.

As Jay says "The whole meaning of life is to get maximum leverage, the greatest return on investment possible for every hour you work, for every ounce of energy you expend and for every dollar you invest in your business." (page 2)

The key theme of the Uncertainty Syndrome is that entrepreneurial success is not so much about increasing your potential as eliminating your constraints.

The Online Entrepreneurs Lament: Paying Too High A Price For Success That Never Comes

Rich asks "does your current level of success equal your potential?" and if not, if you only achieve a small fraction of what you could then this report and its focus on constraints is an important document for you to read, study and then act upon.

The report reveals that Rich is going to open a special coaching program which he calls the Guided Profit System. Come on, you knew there was going to be something to buy following the report.

"The average entrepreneur is working 14 weeks longer each year than in 1969!" That's what the Uncertainty Syndrome says and I can believe it. by my very rough calculations (14 weeks on a working year of 45 weeks after holidays and illness) that is an extra 2.5 hours every day.

Uncertainty Syndrome

It's crazy when you stop and reflect how computers and modern technology are supposed to have made us more efficient and able to do far more things far faster.

As Rich says in the report "Life is what passes you by when you're busy doing things that don't matter growing your business." (page 9)

Rich Schefren then goes on to talk about leisure phobia where you just can't switch off and relax properly.

The Key Message In The Uncertainty Syndrome

"Only the potential of your business is determined by your talents, knowledge, commitment and the amount of time and effort you spend trying to grow it. The actual success of your business is determined by your constraints."

Rich Schefren then turns on the human potential movement for selling a fortune of books, course and other programs to help you to increase your potential when the focus should be on relieving constraints.

Not sure I agree there Rich since I had a tagline that said "Release your hidden potential" and my Eight Pillars of Business Prosperity coaching program is focused on what is holding the business back.

Theory of Constraints

Rich Schefren knows that he is pulling on an existing body of work by Dr. Eliyahu M. Goldratt but it is always useful to have a refresher on this essential topic.

Rich also makes the point that your constraints are often not where you think they are because you don't feel the pain of the bottleneck at the constraint but elsewhere in the process.

In manufacturing which was my background, it used to be pretty easy to spot the constraint. It was the operation where the work in progress built up and  whenever you had a purge and worked huge amounts of overtime, a few days later back came the piles of work in progress that cluttered up the factory.

Internet Marketing Constraints In The Uncertainty Syndrome

How you think makes a difference and Rich quotes Frank Kern's desire to have a continuity program but he couldn't find a suitable membership site. Then he realised that he didn't need a membership site if he just posted the monthly stuff out. problem solved although in an unusual way for an Internet marketing guru.

Then Rich Schefren looks at whether lack of traffic to your website is your major constraint when if you have a great product and a great converting sales page, affiliates will eagerly sign up and send you plenty of traffic.

The constraint is often your mindset. A misplaced belief that you accept. What the NLP coaches would call a self limiting belief.

Seven Silver Bullets In The Uncertainty Syndrome

This is a quick summary so each will start with the constraint and then the silver bullet:

  1. The belief that mistakes must be avoided at all costs - do it wrong fast, action creates clarity.
     
  2. Flying blind until it's too late - fast & frequent intelligence
     
  3. Linear thinking - learn to view your business as one large system
     
  4. An inefficient work style severely limits your productivity- use these ingenious time-savers to instantly double your outputs and profit.
     
  5. Alone in a networked world - create a worldwide personal network of A list players who'll help you solve any problem fast.
     
  6. Outdated one-way marketing tactics - embrace the awesome power of social psychology marketing.
     
  7. Buyer bottleneck in your sales process - rip the lid off your buyer's constraints.

I haven't had time to assimilate everything in the Uncertainty Syndrome report yet and behind these silver bullets is where the real meat of the report lies.

I have made this comment before about Rich Schefren's work but often his advice is just as relevant and just as powerful to off line small business entrepreneurs. Just skip over anything that looks particularly Internet technical but otherwise this Uncertainty Syndrome report is highly recommended and you should grab it while you have the chance.

Rich Schefren does take his blockbusting free reports offline without any warning.

Internet Business Manifesto Update

Rich Schefren's new report is coming soon. I know what it's called but I've been sworn to secrecy but in an interesting twist to promote the new report, Rich Schefren is going back to his first - the famous Internet Business Manifesto which really put Rich Schefren on the map.

Sounds contrary doesn't it in a kind of "Back To the Future" way.

But incredibly the Internet Business Manifesto is now two years old and two years is a long time in such a fast moving business as Internet marketing.

The End Of Strategic Profits?


Does this mean that having learnt to be strategic instead of opportunistic (the key message from the Internet Business Manifesto), Rich is going to turn it all around again.

Mmm. Maybe? Probably not.

I don't see the name change from Strategic Profits to Opportunistic Profits coming too soon but on target, on vision opportunities do have to be seized and seized quickly.

Internet Business Manifesto Update

I didn't make the call but if you sign up, you can gain access to a replay and if you tell a couple of friends, you can have the mp3 and the transcript.

Effectively this is a conversation between Rich and his various guru clients in turn as Rich asks them what their biggest constraint was since under theory of constraint logic, your bottleneck  dictates the speed of your progress.

I take this approach with my Eight Pillars of Business Prosperity as well although I do need to work on the mathematics of my model since I was coming up with enormous potential for improvement numbers.

The call was interesting and has generated a lot of responses and  praise of the Strategic Profits blog but I didn't find it particularly illuminating.

It is nice to hear that big name gurus were where I and possibly you are before they made their millions but there was little in the call that contradicted the original Internet Business Manifesto.

This is how Rich has summarised the key takeaways from the call on his latest blog

"Stated more clearly, you get the fact that:

  • my guru clients have struggled with the same stumbling blocks you now need to overcome...
     
  • your mindset matters and getting the right mentor is critical to side-stepping the land mines in your path

Internet Business Manifesto Update

Rich Schefren is certainly returning to his Internet business coaching roots and it will be interesting to read the new report but I have a problem.

I think the Internet Business Manifesto, The Missing Chapter and the Final Chapter together with the Business Growth Coaching System are excellent. Not many laughs or lighter moments I'll grant you because Rich Schefren delivers the goods in a very intensive schedule.

Rich Schefren & Robert Cialdini

Internet marketer and business coach Rich Schefren is gearing up to launching another of his ground breaking reports in the next few weeks and he is promising to deliver a "boatload of highly valuable (and totally FREE) content that you won’t want to miss" on the Strategic Profits blog.

He's done it before so it is definitely worth signing up to his RSS feed so you get to hear about it or joining his email list. It is so much easier than trying to remember to click over to his blog from your list of bookmarks and favourites.

Anyway to start the process Rich Schefren has the pleasure to interview Dr Robert Cialdini and he has posted the mp3 recording for free downloading on his blog.

If you are not familiar with the name, Robert Cialdini is the world's foremost expert on influence and persuasion. He wrote the classic book “Influence: The Psychology Of Persuasion”.

Now he has a new book “Yes!: 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive” and this is the focus of the interview with Rich Schefren.

Influence and persuasion are at the centre of sales and marketing since the very purpose is to encourage the prospective customer to respond to the call to action. The importance of persuasion doesn't stop there since it is also at the basis of managing people.

I am upgrading my main website at the moment and when I was checking outgoing links, I realised that Rich Schefren has changed the contents of the Profit Vault.

My website says that you used to have the chance to download the Internet Business Manifesto and two business building videos.

Now you have the first three block busting reports from Rich Schefren:

Business Growth System Coaching

I noticed on the email confirmation page, Rich is offering a trial month in his famous Business Growth System coaching program. This is the program that made his reputation as he has coached many of the Internet marketing greats.

The program is excellent if you are serious about creating an Internet business rather than just dabbling around the edges. I started it in March 2007 but don't buy into it if you are expecting to receive tips on how to create a website, improve your search engine optimisation and master pay per click promotions - I recommend the Nitro Blueprint System which is suitable for beginners and intermediates.

Rich you said on the Strategic Profits blog that you read my blog so let me take up a couple of niggles directly with you:

  1. What is happening to the quality control on your offer of this coaching. The front sheet promises a first month fee of $47 before reverting to the usual fee. The second page which processes the order says $97 for the first month. I suspect that people get confused and back away at this stage.
     
  2. Where is the missing month 12 of the Business Growth System coaching program? Month 11 was released to me in January, around March or April I asked your support where was month 12 and I was told that it would appear shortly, now months later, it is still not there. 
     
    You deliver so much in the system that there is supplemental content that I still haven't worked through and many Q&A calls still be to be heard but I am just so curious about what is in the month 12module. It is billed as "The Secret Module" but it's a little too secret at the moment but I would like to know the "underground tactic that hones in on little known loopholes that are almost always overlooked by your competition... loopholes that you can exploit to make massive profits, and easily crush everyone else in your market"
